The Chief Accounting Officer (CAO) is responsible for all Accounting matters of Maplewood Senior Living, a private company, and its affiliate organizations. The CAO will report to and work closely with the Chief Executive Officer in communicating and reporting financial results and forecasts to Maplewood’s capital partner(s).  As a collaborative senior team member, the CAO will partner with the senior leadership team to develop and implement accounting and operational strategies across the organization. The CAO is expected to comply with the highest ethical, technical and regulatory standards.  The Chief Accounting Officer ensures consistent, accurate and concise financial reporting, cash flow forecasting and strategic use of resources.

Chief Accounting Officer Essential Functions:

Organizational Financial Planning and Oversight:

  • Identifies, develops, plans, and executes short, medium and long-range organization strategies; ensures the development and implementation of associated business plans, tactics and policies
  • Provides financial and accounting input and advice to the senior leadership team
  • Supports the organization in contract negotiations (corporate & field based) including business terms, budget implications, discounts, accounting impact, field operations and clinical impact
  • Oversees the preparation of annual budget and business plan, and ensures monthly compliance and/or appropriate documentation and explanation of variances from budget
  • Interviews and selects qualified candidates for the Finance department; monitors and evaluates performance of direct reports; acts as mentor to staff and provides developmental opportunities; works with staff to minimize performance deficiencies; ensures that direct reports hire, supervise, and retain a competent staff
  • Embraces the principle of establishing strong partnership arrangements consistent with the culture of Maplewood Senior Living
  • Develops and oversees implementation of accounting policies and procedures; confers with Maplewood Senior Living department vice presidents and directors to ensure effective financial management throughout Maplewood Senior Living

Oversight of Accounting Operations:

  • Oversees preparation of accounting and reporting to the senior management team and capital partner(s)
  • Oversees accounts payable, accounts receivable and payroll
  • Oversees the monthly close process to provide timely and accurate accounting information
  • Ensures adherence to GAAP accounting principles
  • Ensure compliance with state & federal reporting requirements (i.e. personal property declarations, income & expense reports, etc.)
  • Oversees cash flow projection process and reporting to senior management & capital partners; makes recommendations as to minimum working capital
  • Oversees the selection, maintenance and upgrades of accounting & HRIS systems
  • Oversees the treasury function including cash management, banking relationships & corporate card programs and related policies, standards & practices
  • Responsible for inter-company accounting & reporting
  • Oversees external audit function; ensures timely and accurate completion of monthly balance sheet reconciliations, audit preparation reconciliations and annual audits process including the Medicare Cost Report
  • Oversees entity tax preparation process with external CPA firm; ensure compliance with state & federal tax requirements
  • Monitor the Master Lease covenants including calculation and reporting to senior management and the capital partner(s)

Oversight of Business Decisions and Analytics Operations:

  • Maintain & enhance in-place business intelligence tool; provide lens into operating performance, financial trends and industry Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
  • Oversees the preparation of financial modeling associated with new development or value-add projects
  • Oversees the monthly analysis of budget-to-actual expenses; recommend corrective action when appropriate

Chief Accounting Officer Computer Skills:

  • Working knowledge of accounting & HRIS systems preferred: Ultimate Software, Yardi

Chief Accounting Officer Education and Experience and Certifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting/Finance is required
  • Master’s degree is preferred
  • Minimum six (6) years experience in public accounting or finance
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
  • Seniors’ housing, multi-family real estate & healthcare experience preferred
  • Significant knowledge of capital markets
  • Experience managing accounting/finance teams
